                            자크 다비드 [Jacques Louis David, 1748.8.30~1825.12.29]

                            1748년 8월 30일 파리에서 출생하였다. 19세기 초 프랑스 화단에 군림하였던 고전주의 미술의 대표자이다.

                            1774년 당시의 화가 지망생들이 동경하던 로마대상을 획득하고,

                            이듬해부터 1780년까지 로마에 머무르면서 고전미술을 연구하였다.

                           《호라티우스 형제의 맹세 Oath of the Horatii》(1784)의 스타일은 그의 고전연구의 성과를 나타내는 명작으로,

                            당시 점차 높아지기 시작한 애국사상의 뛰어난 표현으로서 일약 유명해졌다.

                            프랑스 혁명 당시 자코뱅 당원으로서 혁신측에 가담하여, 로베스피에르가 실각하자 투옥되었다.

                            그렇지만 후에 나폴레옹에게 중용되어, 예술적·정치적으로 미술계 최대의 권력자가 되어

                            화단에 많은 영향을 끼쳤다.

                            앵그르, 그로, 제라르를 비롯하여 19세기 중엽에 활약한 고전파 화가들은 모두 그의 밑에서 나왔다.

                            역사적 주제를 그린 작품은, 18세기 로코코 미술의 우아·섬려한 것에 비해, 고

                            대조각이 지니는 조화와 질서를 존중하고

                            장대한 구도 속에서 세련된 선에 의하여 고대조각 그대로와 같은 형태미를 만들어내었다.

                            그러나 이것들은 형식적으로는 잘 다듬어진 대구상화(大構想畵)이긴 하지만, 다소 생동감이 결핍되어 있다.

                            이와는 달리 초상화에서는 고전적인 형식미 속에서 사실적인 묘사력을 충분히 살려

                            참신한 느낌이 약동하고 있다.

                            나폴레옹 실각 후 추방되어 1816년 브뤼셀로 망명하였고, 조국으로 돌아오지 못하였다.

                            그 밖에도 《마라의 죽음》(1793) 《사비니의 여인들》(1799) 《나폴레옹의 대관식》

                           《레카미에 부인의 초상》 등의 대표작이 있다.
